Open Position: Assistant Building Manager, Central City Housing Society

Central City Foundation currently owns five properties in BC that help provide low-income housing, support for families, Indigenous-led programs, addiction treatments and support for social enterprise. Our low-income housing is operated through our affiliated organization, the Central City Housing Society.

Opportunity:

Central City Housing Society operates 2 SRO buildings in the downtown eastside (Abbott Mansion & Cosmopolitan Hotel) with a combined capacity of 112 units and is looking for an Assistant Manager for our two buildings.

Reporting to the Building Manager

Primary Purpose:

The Assistant Building Manager provides support and assistance to the Building Manager at Central City Housing Society. The role will also support in program delivery and engage in community outreach to strengthen relationships and maintain smooth operations at the Abbott Mansion Building and our Women’s Transitional Housing Program at the Cosmopolitan Hotel, while guiding and supporting the staff.

Duties:
  • Work with residents, staff and Building Manager as a member of the housing operations team.
  • Provide assistance and guidance to staff to engage residents in life skills, conflict resolution, creative problem solving and other housing requirements
  • Advise residents, and support staff, on options and expectations concerning conflict resolution, breaches of tenancy agreements, and other tenancy-related issues
  • Maintain documentation for rent rolls, documenting critical incidents, and possible RTB arbitrations, and other reporting as required
  • Establish a positive working relationship with external agencies and other resources within the DTES community 
  • Assist the housing operations team in anticipating and preventing potential problems including dangerous situations
  • Ensures service delivery is consistent with Central City Foundation’s mission and mandate, and external regulatory bodies
  • Providing support and direction to tenants, staff, volunteers and/or community placements  by performing duties such as demonstrating tasks, monitoring work, and providing constructive feedback
  • Participate in training outlined by Building Manager and or senior management
  • Ensure all program records are up-to-date, organized, and easily accessible
  • Regularly assess program effectiveness and suggest enhancements to improve outcomes
  • Monitor inventory levels and order office and cleaning supplies as needed to maintain a well-stocked office
  • Enforce program guidelines to ensure participants adhere to program policies 
  • Provide assistance for pest management and hoarding Issues
Requirements:

The core of our business is serving the inner-city community; therefore, a critical success factor for any person who joins the Central City Housing team is to have an in-depth understanding of the DTES community, anti-oppression work, intersectionality and the legacy of colonialism in our community.

  • Commitment to working with people who are struggling with substance use and/or mental wellness and wellbeing
  • Team members are expected to have gained this understanding through lived experience, as well as any formal education
  • Ability to communicate effectively with residents and staff, verbally and in writing
  • Ability to remain calm and non-judgmental while diffusing conflicts and problem-solving
  • Flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and on-call
  • must have vehicle to respond to on-call emergencies

  • some knowledge of Residential Tenancy Act
Qualifications:
  • Current First Aid Certificate
  • Basic knowledge of the Residential Tenancy Act and Occupational health and Safety regulations
  • At least 5 years front line experience
  • Ability to complete a Criminal Record check to the satisfaction of CCHS
  • Class 5 licence and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Effective communication skills both in reading and writing

Salary range: $54,000-$58,000 plus benefits
